Home sample collection: what actually happens, and how to prepare
A phlebotomist at your door, an OTP, barcoded tubes and a report by tomorrow. What the visit involves, what to have ready, and what should never happen.
Home collection is now the default for most blood tests, and for good reason: no waiting room, no travel while fasting, and the same laboratory processing either way. Here is what the visit actually looks like.
Before the visit
Book a window, not a time. Collections run in 60-minute windows because traffic and earlier appointments move. You will get a message when the phlebotomist is on the way.
Fast if the tests need it. Twelve hours for a lipid profile, ten to twelve for fasting sugar. Water is allowed and helps — being hydrated makes the draw easier and more comfortable.
Have your ID and prescription ready. If a doctor asked for specific tests, keep the prescription to hand so the phlebotomist can check nothing is missing before they leave.
During the visit
You will be asked for an OTP. The phlebotomist cannot complete the collection without it. This is deliberate — it proves to you that the person at your door is the one we dispatched, and it proves to us that the sample came from the right address.
The tubes are barcoded in front of you. Each tube is labelled and scanned at the point of collection rather than later at the lab. Mislabelling is the single most consequential error in pathology, and doing it at your table rather than on a bench is how it is prevented.
Different tests need different tubes. A lavender-topped tube for blood counts, a gold one for most chemistry, grey for glucose. If you are having several tests, expect several tubes — that is normal and does not mean more blood than necessary.
What should never happen
- Nobody should ask you for the OTP over the phone before arriving
- Nobody should ask for payment in cash without providing a receipt
- Tubes should never be labelled away from you, or after leaving
If any of these happen, call the centre before the sample leaves.
After the visit
Samples are transported temperature-controlled and processed the same day for most tests. Your report reaches your account and WhatsApp — usually within 24 hours, faster for a blood count.
If a result is significantly abnormal, our pathologist reviews it before release, and for certain critical values the centre calls you rather than waiting for you to open a message.

Common questions
Is home collection more expensive?
The test price is the same. A collection fee may apply on small orders and is waived above the threshold shown at checkout.
Why do I need to give an OTP?
It proves the person at your door is the one we dispatched, and proves to us the sample came from the right address. The collection cannot be completed without it.
Can someone else be at home instead of me?
The person being tested needs to be present. A family member can assist, and for an elderly or unwell patient that is expected.
How much blood is taken?
Typically 2 to 6 ml per tube, and several tests often share a tube. A full annual panel is still a small total volume.
